Trump Turns to Limited Advisory Team in Considering Strikes on Iran

President Donald Trump is increasingly consulting a select group of advisers while considering potential military action in Iran related to its nuclear program. Two defense officials and a senior administration official report that Trump’s decision-making process is characterized by consultation with a few key figures, including Vice President JD Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as interim National Security Adviser. Trump is also in contact with his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff.

While he engages a wider range of opinions from allies and administration members, his core decision-making circle has narrowed, sidelining figures like National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, who opposes military strikes, and not consistently consulting Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Hegseth’s involvement has been defended by Defense Department spokesman Sean Parnell, who stated that the Secretary has been in frequent communication with the President.

Trump is reportedly listening to military leaders such as Gen. Dan Caine and CIA Director John Ratcliffe. However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that a decision regarding U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict is anticipated within two weeks. Unlike previous presidents who relied on structured foreign policy discussions, Trump’s approach is less formal, allowing for fewer opportunities for officials to challenge his assumptions.

Additionally, Trump’s reduction of the National Security Council since January limits the structured collaboration traditionally used to prepare military options, as evidenced by his sudden decision to lift sanctions on Syria, which surprised senior officials and lacked prior negotiation with relevant parties.
