Jonathan M. Bohn, a 41-year-old Minnesota lobbyist with over 20 years of experience, has been charged with making violent threats aimed at another person, based on court documents filed in Carver County’s 1st Judicial District. The felony charge, categorized as “threats of violence — reckless disregard,” carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Specific examples of threatening text messages allegedly sent by Bohn included violent language regarding firearms.
Following these incidents, a judge set Bohn’s bail at $1 million, mandated no contact with the individual targeted by the threats, and required him to maintain a distance of at least half a mile from the Capitol complex. The threats reportedly stemmed from Bohn’s emotional reaction to a friend’s post about President Trump, coinciding tragically with the recent shooting deaths of Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, as well as serious injuries inflicted on state Sen. John Hoffman.
Despite the alarming nature of his texts, the victim did not respond to Bohn. During a police search of his residence, authorities discovered a firearm but no ammunition. In court, Bohn expressed deep regret, attributing his threats to temporary anguish over recent violent events affecting his friends and colleagues, asserting he is generally a non-violent person. He issued an apology from jail, emphasizing the need for unity and compassion during this time of collective mourning. Currently, Bohn is on administrative leave from the Inter Faculty Organization, which represents multiple state universities. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 27.
