GamecockCentral Reveals Top Linebackers in South Carolina Football History
With the conclusion of South Carolina’s spring practice, Gamecock fans are counting down the days until the fall season. To engage fans during the offseason, GamecockCentral has initiated a "top-10 players by position" series.
The series has covered notable positions such as running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, offensive linemen, quarterbacks, and defensive tackles. Recently, attention turned to the linebacker position, excluding pass-rushing outside linebackers but including hybrid players.
Three experts—Chris Clark, Wes Mitchell, and Kevin Miller—compiled their own lists, paralleling fan votes from the Insiders Forum. Noteworthy discussions ensued about players like Rod Wilson and Tim Bice, who, despite strong performances, did not make the final cut.
Leading the rankings was JD Fuller, the all-time leading tackler in Gamecock history. Clark noted, “Fuller is just one of two players in program history to surpass 400 career tackles.” Meanwhile, Mitchell and Miller spotlighted Skai Moore, celebrated for his coverage skills and a share of the school’s career interceptions record with 14.
Other prominent linebackers included Jasper Brinkley, known as "Hit Man" for his formidable defense, and Ernest Jones, recognized for his sideline-to-sideline agility. Both contributed significantly to the Gamecocks’ defense and received accolades during their careers.
