Newsom to Visit South Carolina, a Crucial State for Presidential Primaries

Governor Gavin Newsom Visits Rural South Carolina Amid Presidential Speculation

Governor Gavin Newsom of California is set to embark on a two-day tour of rural South Carolina next week, fueling speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run. Scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Newsom’s visit will focus on eight economically challenged and environmentally vulnerable counties across the Pee Dee, Midlands, and Upstate regions.

The state Democratic Party chair, Christale Spain, emphasized that the tour aims to connect with voters in areas “hollowed out by decades of Republican control,” highlighting that these communities are not forgotten. South Carolina is also among the first states to hold Democratic primaries in 2028, adding to the relevance of Newsom’s visit.

Despite the growing chatter surrounding his presidential ambitions, Lindsey Cobia, a senior political advisor to Newsom, refuted any assertions that the trip is a precursor to a campaign. Cobia stated that the governor’s focus is on helping Democrats reclaim the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026 and addressing disaster relief for rural families neglected by the previous administration.

Dubbed “On the Road With Governor Newsom,” the tour will include intimate gatherings in local cafes, coffee shops, community centers, and churches within some of the state’s reddest counties, where many residents supported former President Trump in the last election.

This tour is not Newsom’s first outreach to Southern voters; he previously campaigned for President Biden in South Carolina and debated Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. In addition to Newsom, U.S. Representative Ro Khanna from California is also set to engage with voters in South Carolina later this month, further underscoring the state’s importance in shaping the Democratic agenda leading up to 2028.
