The South Carolina Senate Greets Its Largest Freshman Class in Years

The South Carolina General Assembly reconvened at the State House with a significant turnover in members. The House of Representatives and Senate held reorganizational sessions to complete necessary tasks such as adopting rules, assigning committees, and electing leadership. Thirteen new senators, nine Republicans and four Democrats, took their seats for the first time, making it the largest freshman class in recent memory. The senators emphasized working together for the betterment of the state and creating opportunities for future generations. Republicans now hold a supermajority in the Senate for the first time in over 150 years, which will change the debate dynamics. Senate President Thomas Alexander was re-elected to serve another term. The legislature’s true legislative work will begin in January. Lawmakers will not be in session at the State House for the remainder of the year. Subscribe to WIS for more updates and news.
