Study Reveals Washington as One of America’s ‘Farmers Market Capitals’—Discover Where!

Portland-Vancouver Area Ranks as Top Local Food Market Hub

A recent study has established the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro region as a standout area for local food accessibility, ranking fifth among large U.S. metros. According to Trace One’s analysis of "America’s Farmers Market Capitals," this region enjoys 5.0 farmers markets and community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs per 100,000 residents, showcasing its vibrant local food scene.

The metro area, home to approximately 2.5 million residents with a median household income of $95,000, boasts a total of 126 local food markets. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington topped the list with 6.9 markets per 100,000 residents, highlighting the growing interest in locally sourced produce.

Trace One’s research utilized sources such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture Local Food Directories and the Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey. The findings underscore the significance of farmers markets and direct-to-consumer outlets, which are essential for promoting healthy eating, particularly amid rising food prices and evolving consumer preferences.

While Oregon shines, Washington state ranked 25th overall for access to local food markets, providing 3.4 markets per 100,000 residents and totaling 265 local food venues. Vermont was identified as the top state, featuring an impressive 20.1 farmers markets and CSAs per 100,000 residents.

Additionally, Trace One’s April 2025 Local Food Survey revealed that about two-thirds of U.S. adults prioritize health in their food choices, with roughly half often considering the source of their food. Interestingly, while many consumers are willing to pay a modest premium for local food, a significant portion remains hesitant to spend more, highlighting the balance between health and affordability in today’s market.
