Gamecocks Fall to Aggies in SEC Tournament Quarterfinals
ATHENS, G.A. – The No. 14/12 South Carolina softball team, with a season record of 40-15, faced a tough defeat against top-ranked Texas A&M (44-9), losing 12-4 in just five innings during the SEC Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night, May 8.
South Carolina initially took the lead in the second inning after Lexi Winters’ leadoff walk paved the way for Abigail Knight’s single, sending Winters home. However, Texas A&M quickly responded with two crucial two-run home runs, claiming the lead.
The Gamecocks managed to narrow the gap in the third inning with Karley Shelton’s fourth homer of the season and added another run in the fourth, with Ella Chancey’s walk leading to a home plate score thanks to Knight’s fielder’s choice. Unfortunately for South Carolina, the Aggies countered with a pair of unearned runs in the same inning.
In the fifth, Quincee Lilio hit her first home run of the season, but Texas A&M exploded for six runs, bringing the game to a swift conclusion. Starting pitcher Sam Gress (12-9) struck out two in her brief appearance. The Gamecocks now await the NCAA Selection Show, set for Sunday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
